In the fifth volume of the English translation of the Shurangama Sutra, the Buddha asks twenty-five sages in the dharma assembly to describe how he/she attained the state of wisdom. Next to the last one is the Great Strength Bodhisattva, who describes how he attains wisdom through mindfulness of the Buddha. This section is especially relevant and useful for the Pure Land Teaching. Venerable Master Hua delivered the following lecture series in January 1975, during a dharma visit to Taiwan. If you recite the Buddha's name single-mindedly, you can control the six sense faculties, turn states around, and put an end to all your random, scattered thoughts. If your recitation is not interrupted, then you will surely be born in the Land of Ultimate Bliss. And so continuity is very important. You cannot recite some and then stop. Your recitation should be so natural that even if you wanted to stop, you wouldn't be able to. The recitation will carry on by itself, and you won't be able to halt it. It will be the only thing on your mind.
